ANDROS, GREECE—According to a ProtoThema report, Greek authorities announced the discovery of an ancient shipwreck off the island of Andros. The site was originally brought to the attention of the Ephorate of Underwater Antiquities of the Hellenic Ministry of Culture by a private individual. While investigating the location, archaeological divers located the wreck’s remains at a depth of between 122 and 144 feet of water. The vessel appears to have been a merchant ship that was carrying between 600 and 650 amphoras when it sank sometime in the late fifth or early fourth century B.C. Experts have concluded that the ship’s cargo consisted of at least three different types of commercial amphoras that may have been filled with wine or olive oil. The Ministry of Culture believes that the discovery significantly enhances understanding of ancient maritime trade and navigation during the late Classical period.
